Sky Science Paper Mache Models

The students created models of their research topic out of paper maché.

First we blew up balloons to the size we thought would best represent our planet or celestial body.

Next we mixed some flour (one part) and water (three parts) with a dollop of white glue. Then we began dipping strips of newspaper into mixture and pasted them to our balloons.

And kept pasting...

...and pasting.

We let our paper mache dry over a few days.

Then we studied pictures of our planets and started painting them with tempura paints.

And painted...

...and painted...

...and painted...

...and painted.

Then we added some final touches, like texture...

...and rings.

We added tails to the comets...

...and sunspots to the sun.

The final products:

"Saturn"

"Uranus"

"Jupiter"

(notice the giant red spot)

"The Moon"
